Tigers Finish Third In Scotland County Invitational Tourneys

The Scotland County Invitational was held on back-to-back nights and the results were nearly identical. The only difference was that eight varsity teams competed on March 10th while the same eight schoolís junior high teams competed in Memphis on March 11th.

The results were nearly identical for the host teams, as Scotland County finished third in both events.

The varsity Tigers took on Canton in round one and used a second quarter charge to a 175-100 halftime advantage. Canton was never able to cut into that deficit and SCR-I went on to win 365-225. Julie Triplett led Scotland County with 12 correct toss-up answers. Lance Smith added five in the winning effort.

The Tigers fell one question short of the championship match. SCR-I led North Shelby 140-90 at halftime. That lead shrank to 170-150 at the end of the third period. North Shelby completed the rally and with just three questions remaining took a 25 point lead. The deficit shrank to 15 points with one last shot for the Tigers. SCR-I rang the buzzer and nailed the toss-up question for 10 points. SCR-I got one of the bonus answers to tie the game but the rally ended there. North Shelby got the chance on the final three bonus questions and the Raiders were able to add five points for the 235-230 win.

Triplett topped the scoring for Scotland County with seven toss-up questions. Smith answered four and Loren Billington added three correct answers.

The Tigers rebounded in their tourney finale and bested Knox County 235-190 to secure a third place finish. Triplett secured a place on the all-tourney team with another team-high performance. She led SCR-I with nine toss-up questions to finish the event with an 8.67 scoring average. Smithís final game performance also earned him all-tourney honors as he scored five times to finish with a 5.0 scoring average in the event, which tied as eighth highest overall.

Clark County went on to defeat North Shelby to win the event.

The same could be said for the Friday night event when the Indians junior high team defeated the younger North Shelby squad for the tourney title.

The junior high Tigers started out their bracket play with a 340-235 win over Canton. Brett Courtright and Christina Duzan each answered nine toss-up questions.

The younger SCR-I squad did not fare as well against North Shelby, falling to the Raiders 390-230.

The third place game was a nail biter, coming down to the final question. Putnam County picked up 15 points on question #50. But the Tigers nailed two of the bonus questions for 10 points to prevail 315-310.

Courtright and Duzan each answered six questions. Nathan Purvis answered three and Dylan Gelbach answered two.
