Tigers Last-Second Shot Rims Out In 65-64 Loss To Rams

In a season of hard knocks for the Scotland County Tigers, Friday night may have been the toughest, as a pair of last-second shots rimmed out allowing Schuyler County to escape with a 65-64 victory.

The Tigers came out riding the emotion of Senior Night in the season finale at SCR-I gym. The Tigers built a 16-15 advantage at the end of the first period behind five early points from Bryce Blomme. The lead could have been bigger, but the Tigers struggled from the free-throw line early on, making just three of eight attempts from the charity stripe.

The Tigers brought the home crowd to its feet midway through the second period. Chris Holt and Matt Wickert hit back-to-back three pointers. Lathan Watson followed that with two free throws that put the Tigers ahead 28-18. But the Rams clawed their way back to trail just 37-33 at halftime.

The Rams tied the game early in the third period. After a Grant Blomme three pointer momentarily put the Tigers back on top, Schuyler County answered with a 7-2 run to pull ahead 44-42 with 3:53 left in the period.

The momentum swung back in favor of SCR-I when Greg Neagle scored in the paint. Jared Shelley followed that up with a driving score before a bucket by Bryce Blomme made the score 50-44.

Schuyler County rallied once again to tie the game at 54-54 to close the third period.

The two teams went back and forth for most of the final eight minutes. Bryce Blomme hit a couple of three pointers early to keep the Tigers on top with a slim margin. The Rams responded and tied the contest at 62-62 with 1:38 left to play.

The Tigers took their final lead, 63-62 on a Bryce Blomme free throw at the 1:31 mark.

The Rams took a three-point advantage into the final 60 seconds. Blomme cut the deficit to one point with a driving score. The Tigers got the ball back with 21.4 ticks left on the clock after a Rams turnover. But the Tigers could not get a shot to fall. A desperation three pointer at the buzzer by the Tigers bounced off the rim and left the Rams victorious.

Bryce Blomme led all scorers with 22 points. Shelley finished with nine points and Cody Musgrove had eight. The loss sent the Tigers record to 3-19 and 1-5 in the Tri-Rivers Conference.

The Rams (13-10, 3-3) were led by Alex Horn with 17 points. Chris Oliver pitched in with 14 points.
