Bulldogs Beat Tigers Thanks To 23-5 Free-Throw Disparity
A 23-5 advantage at the free-throw line proved to be the difference as LaPlata knocked off Scotland County 72-61 on February 17 at LaPlata.
The Bulldogs built an 18-13 advantage in the first period as the two teams traded three pointers back and forth. Matt Wickert and Jared Shelley each hit from behind the arc in the game’s opening eight minutes. But LaPlata answered with three three pointers of its own to lead by five points.
The margin swelled to 45-32 at the intermission thanks to a 27-19 run in the second period as both teams opened up the offense.
Greg Neagle had six points in the period for the Tigers but it was LaPlata’s David Fouch and Zach Robinson who really lit it up, combining for 19 points.
The Tigers tried to battle back in the second half, outscoring LaPlata in both the third and fouth quarters. But the Tigers could not get over the hump as LaPlata’s Matt Fouch made more free throws in the game’s final eight minutes (eight) than the Tigers were allowed to attempt (five) during the entire game.
“We played pretty well the entire game, we just dug a hole that we couldn’t get out of,” said Coach Ryan Brown. “We’re going to play these guys again in the opening round of Districts and I hope our guys are looking forward to it.”
Matt Fouch led all scorers with 24 points, 13 of which came in the fourth period when he scored all of his team’s points in the game’s final eight minutes. His twin brother, David, scored 13 points while Robinson finished with 23 points for the Bulldogs who are seeded third in the upcoming Class 2 District 5 Tournament.
Jared Shelley finished with 16 points to lead SCR-I, which dropped to 3-18 on the year. Wickert finished with 11 points and Neagle had nine. Cody Musgrove and Bryce Blomme both contributed eight points and Grant Blomme finished with seven in a balanced scoring effort for the Tigers.
