Augusta Purvis Wins SCR-I Spelling Bee
Augusta Purvis, sixth grade daughter of Lynn and Lana Purvis, won the 23rd annual Spelling Bee held February 11th at the Scotland County R-I North School. She will compete in the 2005 Quincy Herald-Whig Regional Spelling Bee on March 21st at Quincy Junior High School. The all-school Spelling Bee is designed to be an educational event promoting good spelling, vocabulary, and grammar.
There were 24 students participating in the competition ranging from third to eighth grade. Eighth grade participant, Michael Moore, son of Tony and Beverly Moore, was the runner-up and Junior High champion. He will attend the Regional Spelling Bee in Quincy, IL, if for some reason Augusta is unable to be there.
In addition, six second grade students participated in the local Pre-Spelling Bee. Rachel Duzan, daughter of Michael and Marie Duzan, was this year’s second grade spelling champion.
Lori Fulk presented each of the winners with a new dictionary. Augusta received a Webster’s Universal Encyclopedic Dictionary for being the All School champion. Michael received a Webster’s College Dictionary for being the Junior High champion, and Rachel received a Scholastic Children’s Encyclopedia for winning the second grade Pre-Spelling Bee. All the dictionaries awarded as prizes were donated by the Epsilon Iota Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.
