Lady Tigers Bring Home Title With 53-48 Win Over Marion County

Fortunately for the Scotland County girls basketball team, a varsity basketball game lasts 32 minutes. For most of the first 30 minutes of Saturdayís championship game of the North Shelby Tourney, the Lady Tigers trailed Marion County by 10 points or more.

But with two and a half minutes left in the contest SCR-I made its move. Coach Kelli Swearingen switched to a full-court man-to-man press that quickly took its toll on the Lady Mustangs.

ďWe upped the pressure and simply wore them down,Ē said Swearingen. ďWe put Jamie Fuller at the top of the press and she just hounded their ball handlers and forced them into bad decisions.Ē

To make the defense work, Swearingen switched to a smaller lineup.

ďWe went to a quicker five on the court so that we could guard them all over the place,Ē she said.

While the defense fueled the rally, SCR-I still had to score 23 points in the final eight minutes of the game to rally for the 53-48 victory.

Scotland County struggled shooting the ball for much of the first three periods as the shots simply were not falling.

The bulk of the Lady Tigersí damage came at the free throw line. After Ali Fromm hit three of four free throws to cut the deficit to single digits, Angie Bulen converted a three-point play and suddenly SCR-I was within four points.

Fromm drilled a jumper before Rebecca Consbrock was fouled. The senior hit both free throws to tie the contest.

The Lady Tigers put the game away at the charity stripe as Valerie Crawford and Ashlee Frederick both hit clutch free throws to secure the victory.

On the night Scotland County hit 23 of 29 free throws. Marion County converted just three of 13 from the charity stripe.

Fromm made 11 of 12 free throws on her way to a game-high 27 points.

Leah Wilson led Marion County (8-6) with 21 points. Scotland County improved to 9-6, making it five straight victories en route to bringing home the championship trophy. Fromm and Brittney Courtright were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances in the girlsí three victories in the event.
