Tigers Blast Knox County In Tournament Opener
The sports adage goes, “It’s difficult to beat a team three times in one season.” Scotland County proved that Monday night in the opening round of the North Shelby Tourney as the Tigers avenged a pair of early season losses to Knox County with a 93-79 victory over the Eagles.
“We played them close in the Highland Tournament before the game slipped away,” said coach Ryan Brown. “This one did not get away from us as a lot of guys stepped up and got the job done. That was the most complete game we have played all season.”
The Tigers opened a double-digit advantage in the first period behind a barrage of three pointers. SCR-I hit five three pointers in the game’s opening quarter to build a 26-14 lead.
Grant Blomme continued the bombardment from behind the arc in the second period. He drilled a trio of three pointers to help his team expand the lead to 52-38 at the intermission.
“We hit nine three pointers in the first half but we also got a lot of easy shots in transition by creating turnovers with our defense,” Brown said.
Gerit Nunan scored 13 points in the third period to help bring Knox County to within 11 points at 71-60 after three quarters of play.
Bryce Blomme made sure that was as close as the Eagles would get. He scored 11 of his team-high 22 points in the fourth quarter as Scotland County (2-11) prevailed by a final mark of 93-79.
Grant Blomme ended the game with 15 points while Jared Shelley and Greg Neagle each contributed 13 points.
Nunan led all scorers with 33 points
