Rams Seize ‘Rock’ Trophy From Tigers In 82-62 Defeat

Thursday night was a roller coaster ride for the Scotland County Tigers as they rode plenty of peaks and valleys during the 32 minutes of basketball versus Schuyler County at Queen City on January 13th.

Ultimately the game ended in a prolonged valley as the Rams blew open a close game to run away with a 66-49 victory to earn the Rock Traveling Trophy.

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead riding the emotion of the memorial contest for former Tiger Jason Rockhold. Bryce Blomme hit a jumper and Matt Wickert followed with a three pointer to make the score 5-0.

But an 8-4 advantage quickly disappeared as Schuyler County went on an 11-0 run to lead 15-8 and force an SCR-I time-out with 2:24 left in the opening period.

SCR-I responded as Cody Musgrove and Jared Shelley each hit shots before Musgrove tied the game at 15-15 with a three pointer from the corner.

The lead went back and forth to open the second period. But after a three-point play by Greg Neagle brought Scotland County within one point, the Rams answered with a 9-0 run to create some breathing room.

The Schuyler County advantage swelled to as many as 14 points late in the second quarter before Grant Blomme hit a pair of three pointers to make the score 42-35 at halftime.

Five quick points by Matt Wickert brought Scotland County screaming back to within two points at 44-42 with 6:44 left in the third period.

That was the Tigers last gasp as Schuyler County went on a 22-7 run to close out the quarter on top 66-49.

The final eight minutes were dominated by the defenses as the Rams prevented any late runs and secured the 82-62 win.

Bryce Blomme led Scotland County with 11 points. Musgrove had 10 points and Grant Blomme had nine. Wickert and Neagle each chimed in with eight points for SCR-I, which dropped to 1-11 on the year. Schuyler County improved to 6-4 behind a game-high 24 points from Jonathan Norman and 15 points from Chris Oliver.
