In the spring of 1983 he and Gail moved to Kansas City where he worked as an attorney at the law firms of Gage and Tucker and later Hazelton, Laner and Batson. In 2002 he became the COO and in-house council for Stratford Development Corp. He was honored at his memorial service as being fair and honest, always taking time to fully listen to his clients as he helped them with their legal affairs.

He is survived by his wife, Gail; sons, Michael and Christopher Shepard of the home in Shawnee, KS; parents, Myron and Marguerite Shepard of Kirksville, MO; brothers, Dr. Eric (Linda) Shepard of Perrinton, MI, and Michael Shepard of Kirksville, MO. He had a special way of putting people at ease and getting everyone to open up and accept him for who he really was - a loving and caring person.
