Alta Marie Myers, 90, of Spring-River Christian Village, Joplin, MO, formerly of Memphis, MO, died August 9, 2005, at St. Johns Medical Center in Joplin, MO.

She was born January 6, 1915, on the family farm northeast of Memphis, MO. Alta was the youngest daughter of Sturlin and Yuba Garrett.

At age eight, Alta and her older sister, Opal, wearing organdy dresses made by their mother, were baptized by Reverend G. Lolin Eaton at the First Christian Church in Memphis, MO.

Alta attended Pleasant Hill School and then graduated from Memphis High School in 1932. Upon graduation she took the County Teacher examination and taught school during the next five years at the one-room country schools, Clay Point, North Liberty, and Hendricks. She attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman University) during the summers.

Alta was united in marriage to Glen E. Myers on June 27, 1937 at the First Baptist Church by Rev. Eben Jones in Canton, MO. Attendants were her sister, Opal Garrett and future brother-in-law, Harold Kirkpatrick. After her children were born, Alta became a devoted mother and homemaker, as well as assisting her husband, Glen in the family farm certified seed business.

She served the community well in many capacities at the Christian Church as Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, Christian Women Workers officer and other church work as needed. She was active as a 4-H leader, a Business and Professional Womenís officer and greatly enjoyed being on the Silver-Haired Legislature.

Alta was always a gracious hostess and a friend to everyone. She never met a stranger she couldnít visit with. She was known in her circle of friends as the social butterfly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen in October of 1989, and her sister, Opal Kirkpatrick in June of 2004.

She is survived by son, Stanley Myers and his wife, Beverly of Linn, MO; daughter, Ferol Good and her husband, Dwayne of Joplin, MO; six grandchildren, Troy Good and his wife, Lisa of Highland Village, TX, Todd Good of St. Peters, MO, Traci Heinrich and her husband, Bryan of Mt. Carmel, IL, Terry Good and his wife, Krista of Joplin, MO, Debbie Schmelzle of Columbia, MO and Leslie Wolfe and her husband, Jeff of Linn, MO; 12 great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Kyle and Avery Good, all of Joplin, MO, Ashley and Lauren Good of Highland Village, TX, Paige and Britton Heinrich of Mt. Carmel, IL, Andy Schmelzle of San Antonio, TX, Ariel, Abbott, and Alec Shoop of Linn, MO, and baby Jaden Heinrich due to be born August 29th; One nephew, Neal Kirkpatrick; and one niece, Nola Ann Boyd.

The family has suggested memorials to Spring River Christian Village or Shiloh Christian Childrenís Ranch and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.

Funeral services were held August 13, 2005, at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with Bro. Jack Sumption officiating. Musicians were Ann Luther, organist, Dwayne Good, soloist, Angela Westhoff and Alisa Kigar, vocalists. Body bearers were grandsons, Troy Good, Todd Good, Terry Good; great-grandson, Andy Schmelzle; grandsons-in-law, Bryan Heinrich and Jeff Wolfe. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO. Arrangements were handled by the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
