Martha M. (Mrs. James) McConnell, 86, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died July 19, 2005, at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant, IA.

Mrs. McConnell, the former Martha Maxine Jackson, was born on December 13, 1918, in Downing, MO. She was the daughter of Noah and Clara (Miller) Jackson.

On August 4, 1942, in Lancaster, MO, Martha was united in marriage to James Wesley McConnell, while he was on leave from his service in the US Army Medical Corps during World War II. Mr. McConnell died February 3, 1998 at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant, IA.

During her husbandís military service, Mrs. McConnell worked part time at the Lancaster REA. Following his honorable discharge, the couple moved to Batavia, IA. Mrs. McConnell worked at a grocery store in Batavia, IA, for about 15 years. In the late 1950ís Martha began a career with the United States Postal Service. She worked as a mail clerk in the Batavia office for many years. She was also called to supply clerking duties in Ottumwa and Lockridge, IA. Following her retirement, the couple moved to make their home in Mt. Pleasant, IA.

Mrs. McConnell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant, IA. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). She served many years as a member of the Batavia Library Board. Mrs. McConnell also volunteered at the Midwest Old Threshers in Mt. Pleasant, IA. She was known in her family for her excellent cooking and seamstress skills, as well as being fastidious in her housekeeping.

Those sharing in Marthaís life include a daughter and her husband, Judy and Duane Goff of Mt. Pleasant, IA; two grandsons and their wives, David and Amy Goff of Bridgeman, MI and Darrell and Brenda Goff of Letts, IA; five great-grandchildren, Alec and Haley Goff of Bridgeman, MI, and Levi, Logan and Lexi Goff of Letts, IA; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Baxter of Downing, MO, Bina Lou Childress and her husband, Junior of Memphis, MO and Mrs. Wilma Lee Baxter of Greentop, MO.

In addition to her parents and husband, three brothers, Leland, Bernie and Lloyd Jackson and a sister, Lelia Pearl Jackson, preceded Martha in death.

Funeral services were held July 23, 2005, at the Downing Christian Church, Downing, MO, with Reverend Larry Smith of the Downing Christian Church officiating. Burial was in the Downing Cemetery, Downing, MO. Arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Downing and Lancaster, MO. Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the First Presbyterian Church, Midwest Old Threshers, the Coffey Cemetery Assoc. (near Downing) or a charity of the donorís choice.
