HELEN LAVAUGHN RILEY

Helen Lavaughn Riley, the daughter of Richard Thomas and Allie Myrtle (Allen) Redding, was born on March 5, 1917 in rural Downing, MO. She passed away April 18, 2005 at the age of 88 years at the Schuyler County Nursing Home in Queen City, MO.

She received elementary education in the Walnut Grove country schools and graduated from the Downing High School on May 18, 1933.

On July 19, 1937, in Memphis, MO, she was united in marriage to James Reed Riley. After the ceremony, they returned to the Riley family farm, just south of Downing, MO, where they spent their entire married life. Helen enjoyed cooking, working outside with pet lambs, her flowers and the garden. She continued to live on the same farm until her health failed and she moved to the Schuyler County Nursing Home in Queen City, MO on December 26, 2003.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Reed on January 9, 1992; her parents; and her brothers, Leonard and Robert.

Surviving are her three children, Betty and husband, Perley Smith of Queen City, MO, Brenda and husband, Jim Brush of Peoria, IL, and James Robert and wife, Charlene Riley of Peoria, IL; eight grandchildren, David Smith, Daniel Smith, Deanne Winkler, Kim Craft, Kara Tucker, Kyle Brush, Angie Riley and Jeremy Riley; 11 great-grandchildren, Shane, Amanda, Cole and Jacob Craft, Melissa Tucker, Ashtyn and Matthew Winkler, Bethany Kerkhover, Andrew and Macie Smith and Skyler Brush; two sisters, Maxine Atkinson and husband, Ed and Wilma Smoot, all of Downing, MO; one sister-in-law, Maxine Redding of Keokuk, IA; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held April 21, 2005, at the Norman Funeral Home of Downing, MO, with George Bradburn, pastor of the Queen City Christian Church, Queen City, MO officiating. Music was provided by organist, Maureen Watkins and soloist, Cole Tippett. Pallbearers were David Smith, Daniel Smith, Kyle Brush, Jeremy Riley, Jeff Craft, Greg Tucker, and Tim Winkler. Memorials have been established for the Downing City Cemetery or the Schuyler County Nutrition Site. Burial was in the Downing City Cemetery in Downing, MO. Arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Downing, MO.
