KENNETH JAMES “HOPPIE” SHACKLETT (12/8/1925 – 2/28/2005)
(9/24/1928 – 3/2/2005)

Kenneth James “Hoppie” Shacklett, 79, of Memphis, MO, formerly of Gorin, MO, passed away February 28, 2005, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO.

Kenneth was born December 8, 1925, in rural Scotland County, MO, the son of Ben and Leota Ammons Shacklett.

He attended Hicks grade school and Gorin High School. Kenneth served in the Army during World War II.

After leaving the army he worked for Rowe Ewing in the Williamstown, MO area as a farm hand. He later moved to the Weaver and Augusta, IA, area where he worked for the Army Ammunition Plant in Burlington, IA. He retired from the plant in 1986 after 20 years. While in Iowa he enjoyed fishing, gardening and visiting with his friends. He moved back to Gorin in 1995, where he lived in the Gorin Senior Housing until going to the Scotland County Care Center in August of 2004.

He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Frances Shacklett of Gorin, MO and Mrs. Madeline Shacklett of Ottumwa, IA; two nieces, Mrs. Sharon Johnston and husband, Keith of Kansas City, KS, Mrs. Judy Rhynas and husband, Dave of Ottumwa, IA; a nephew-in-law, Bill Ebling of Gorin, MO; great-nieces, Mrs. Leon (Ann) Shaw and Mrs. Gary (Jan) Howell, all of Gorin, MO, Mrs. Clay (Kelly) Yantzi of Kansas City, KS, Amanda Rhynas of Ottumwa, IA; great-nephews, Larry Ebling and his wife, Vickie of Reed Springs, MO, Kyle Amos and wife, Stacey of Shawnee Mission, KS, and James Rhynas of Ames, IA; great-great-nieces and nephews, Julie and Jamie Shaw of Gorin, MO, Sally Shannan of Baring, MO, Scott Ebling and fiancee Denise and their mother, Janie Ebling, all of Gorin, MO, Dustin and Megan Amos of Kansas City, KS, and Ryder Amos of Shawnee Mission, KS; great-great-great-niece and nephew, Claire and Ben Shannan of Baring, MO, and a host of friends from Gorin and the Scotland County Care Center and from the Augusta and Weaver, IA area.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph Shacklett of Gorin, MO and Kendell Shacklett of Ottumwa, IA; a niece, Mrs. Mary Helen Ebling of Gorin, MO, and a companion of 20 years, Mrs. Mildred Fraizer of Augusta, IA.

The family has suggested memorials to the Scotland County Care Center and they may be left at or mailed to Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.

Funeral services were held March 3, 2005, at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with Rev. Ernest Deatrick officiating. Pallbearers were Leon Shaw, Danny Roach, Dick Fry, Johnny Erickson, Kenny Clatt, Mike Parrish, Eddie Tague, and Kenny McNamar. Honorary bearers were Don Tague, Bruce Tague, and Bill Roach. Interment was in the Gorin Cemetery, Gorin, MO.
