SCR-I Board Approves Plans For Summer School

The Scotland County R-I Board met in regular session on Thursday, December 15th, in the elementary art room with seven members present.

Newton Summer School

The board voted 7-0 to approve participation in the Newton Learning summer school program.

“We have participated in the program for the three previous summers and it has been a success,” said Superintendent Dave Shalley. “We believe this is a quality program and both the students and district will benefit.”

The tentative summer school dates are May 22 to June 23.

Amend 2005-2006 Budget

By law the district must adopt a budget by July 1 of the current fiscal year. The district then sets the tax rate in August. The old tax rate was used to determine local and state aid for the July budget.

In order to take advantage of the phasing out of the old formula the 2006 tax rate was set at $3.65 rather than $3.36.

At the December board meeting, the new tax rate figure was plugged into the formula to determine the state aid calculation.

Since the new tax rate will increase the state, and the local revenues, the budget needed to be amended to reflect the change. The Board voted 7-0 to amend the budget to reflect the new figures.

Winter Workshop

The board voted 7-0 to set March 6th as the date for the board’s winter workshop. The workshop will begin at 5:15 p.m. The place has yet to be determined. The workshop will be for planning and discussion purposes only. No official action will be taken.

Board Meeting Dates

Currently the official board meeting date is the last Thursday of each month.

“This has presented some problems in the past with the timing of paying the bills and several conflicts with other meetings,” Shalley stated.

To correct the issue the board voted 7-0 to move the official board meeting date from the last Thursday of the month to the 2nd Thursday of the month beginning in March of 2006.

Personal Days

According to board policy the use of a personal day to extend a holiday must be approved by the board.

Nathan Pippert requested a personal day on January 2nd due to the opportunity to travel with his family, and Jo Beth Harvey requested the use of a personal day on December 16th to attend the college graduation of her son Mikel. The board voted 7-0 to approve the requests.

Executive Session

In executive session the Board of Education approved the minutes by a 6-0 vote. Doug Shalley excused himself during the board’s evaluation of the superintendent. Superintendent Shalley expressed his sincere appreciation to the Board of Education for the opportunity, and thanked them for their support.
