Chamber to Kick Off Holiday Shopping Season On Sunday

The Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Christmas shopping season kickoff on Sunday, November 20th in coordination with numerous area business open houses.

The Chamber is sponsoring a cookie decorating activity for kids from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. that afternoon. Children will be welcomed at the Rotary building on the east side of the square where the Chamber will supply the cookies and decorating materials for the kids to create a special cookie to take home.

Registration boxes are available now at area merchants to sign up for Memphis Bucks giveaways to be held Sunday in conjunction with the event. Customers do not have to be present Sunday to win.

The Scotland County Antique Fair Association will be hosting a luncheon on Sunday at the organization’s building on the west side of the square.

The Chamber is once again sponsoring afternoon Christmas matinees at the Memphis Theatre in December. Shows will be December 3, 10 and 17. Admission is a canned good item to be donated to the local food pantry.

Chamber members will be sacking candy on Tuesday, December 13th at the Madison House in preparation for Santa’s visit to Memphis.

Following the December 17th matinee, the Memphis Fire Department will transport the kids from the theatre via fire truck to the V.F.W. to meet with Santa Claus.

Registration for the annual Christmas Decorating Contest will close December 14th with judges awarding the top honors on Saturday evening, December 17th.

“We encourage the public to enter their homes, their neighbors and their friends for this year’s contest,” said Chamber member Sandy Arnold.

Entries can be made at the Memphis Democrat office and will also be accepted by phone. Call 465-7016 to enter a home in the contest. First prize in the residential category is $100 in Memphis Bucks. Second place pays $75 with third getting $50 in Memphis Bucks. Winners in the commercial category will receive prizes from the Chamber as well.

In addition to the holiday activities, December is also election month for the Chamber of Commerce. New officers will be selected at a December 13 meeting at the Madison House beginning at 6:00 p.m. The organization will elect a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer.

“The Chamber is always looking for new faces, new ideas, and new energy to continue to promote area business and commerce in our area, so please plan on attending,” Arnold stated.
