Momís Treasured Recipes Cooking Up A Cure for Cancer

Sisters D.J. Stiff Tague and Carol L. Stiff Anderson both battled cancer late in their lives. The two siblings passed away in the summer of 2004, just six weeks apart. To commemorate their lives while also helping the battle against cancer, the two womenís families, Sandy, Jane, Mona, David and Paul Tague and Tina, Kandi and Scott Anderson, joined together to create a cookbook.

ďOur mothers, just like yours, had many great recipes,Ē the bookís dedication page states. ďWith every recipe, memories are enjoyed each time we prepare them. This book is to honor all mothers, the finest cooks, that always add a sprinkle of love in the food they have prepared over the years.Ē

Mona (Tague) Beckley spearheaded the project after she had experienced success with another cookbook used as a fund-raiser for her Relay For Life team several years earlier.

The families and friends began promoting the idea and began collecting recipes to be compiled in the book that came off the presses early in 2005.

The finished product features more than 400 pages of prized recipes ranging from Augusta Russellís Sugar Cookies to Zucchini Jam.

The cookbook is not only for recipes. It was created with a number of places for the owner to record special memories to add sentimental value when the book is passed on to the next generation.

ďWe hope these special selection dividers help you create a family heirloom,Ē Mona Beckley said. ďIt can be filled out by your mother, by you for your children, or your memories of your mother. Add pictures, recipes that you prepare often, or your motherís favorites. Write a note by the recipes you like in this cookbook and this will indeed become a family treasure.Ē

But the cookbook didnít stop at good food and happy memories. It also has been a powerful tool in the fight against cancer.

A year after the death of D.J. Tague, her family presented a check for $1,500 to the Scotland County Cancer Fund to assist local cancer victims. The donation was made from proceeds generated by the sale of the cookbook.

ďSharing the proceeds this time just seemed to be the right way to honor both Carol and my mother,Ē Mona said. ďCancer hits home for lots of people and Iím glad the cookbook can raise money to fight it.Ē

Additional proceeds have been earmarked for the American Cancer Society, which the families also supported with their efforts at the local Relay for Life.

Members of the Monaís Angels Relay For Life Team joined with the siblings to help promote and sell the cookbook. Tague also praised the work done by her family members, Ruth Mumford, Karri Feeney and Tina Jorgensen for their efforts in collecting recipes, designing and editing the book and promoting sales.

Cookbooks are still available at several local outlets including the Memphis Democrat, A Payne in the Glass, Rose Hardware, Oakwood Industry, the Scotland County Health Department and Monaís Studio. They are also being sold in the Tipton, IA community where Carol Andersonís family still resides. More than 1,300 copies of the book have been sold.

The price of the book is $15. You can order a copy by sending a check for $15 plus $3 for postage and handling to Cancer Cookbook Fund c/o Mona Beckley at 428 S. Market Street, Memphis, MO 63555.
