City Sign Grant Not Approved By MoDOT
Visitors would be hard pressed to find a resident of Memphis that wonít greet you when you come to town. A warm hello will have to do at least for another year as the Missouri Department of Transportation informed the Memphis City Council that its grant application for funding of new ďWelcome to MemphisĒ signs had not been approved.
The city in conjunction with Northeast Missouri Regional Planning Commission had submitted a grant proposal to MoDOTís Northeast Regional Transportation Enhancement program requesting roughly $50,000 to fund the signs as well as other landscaping and beautification for the city.
Mayor Mike Stone was informed by letter that Memphis was not one of the nine projects selected for the approximately $700,000 in funding allotted under this yearís program. There were a total of 15 grant applications considered for funding this year.
The selection committee encouraged the city to reapply for the grant next year.
