Area Officials Lend a Hand at Youth Center Workday
by Sheila Moseley
Several county and state officials got out their work clothes and helped out at “The Place” this past Saturday. Those helping were Scott Callicott, Hannibal District Director for U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulshof; First District State Representative Brian Munzlinger and his son, Clint; and Associate Circuit Judge Karl DeMarce. Representatives from the Memphis Chamber of Commerce and other adults were present to lend a hand. In addition to our regular youth, members of the Methodist, Christian, and Baptist youth teams also joined in the fun.
The major emphasis for the youth center this day was the front exterior doors and windows. AmeriCorps-*VISTA, Sheila Moseley has received $500.00 in funding from a grant she wrote. Youth Service America (YSA) selected our project as a DisneyHand Minnie Grant. This grant was to continue a project started during the National Youth Service Days in April.
As one of 57 grant winners, we were chosen out of over 150 applicants from across the world, for our leadership and commitment to engage youth in service. We were to implement a unique project that delivers a high level of service, involve elected officials and the media, and engage youth in service year-round.
“The Place” will be a facility that will allow students a place to work on homework, have computer and Internet access, and meet friends for a friendly game after school. We are located off the southeast corner of the Memphis square; behind the abstract office and across from Coffrin’s Shoe Store.
We have come a long way since January 2004, when the Modern Apartments were donated for this purpose. However, we still have a great deal to do. Plumbing and electrical work are our biggest obstacle right now. If you have skills in either of these areas, we would appreciate a little of your time. Any help of time, talent, and monetary donations is greatly appreciated.
