Sheriff Warns About Possible Scams in Area

A pair of recent incidents has led Scotland County Sheriff Wayne Winn to issue a warning to area residents to be on the lookout for possible scams.

Because they are ongoing investigations, Winn would not elaborate on the particulars but he did ask property owners to do their research before entering any labor agreements with traveling contractors offering to install lightning rods, do asphalt or paving work, painting or tree trimming.

Were not saying there are not legitimate businesses offering these services, but people need to do their homework before they go into an agreement such as one of these types mentioned, Winn said.

The sheriff recommend asking for a business card and references and also noted that paying in advance for work is unwise.

If contacted by a prospective scam, the individual can assist law enforcement by getting a license plate number or vehicle description and contacting the sheriffs department immediately.
