Scotland County Speedway To Open Race Season This Weekend

Fast-paced racing action is once again returning to Memphis as the Scotland County Speedway will kick off the 2005 racing season this weekend with a special two-day show. The O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series will headline the season opener at the Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway on April 22-23.

The stars from the USMTS will be traveling to Memphis to race on one of their favorite tracks in the Midwest. They will be doing battle with the local stars in two days of racing excitement brought to the fans by J & J Ag and Travel Connection. The first modified race car crossing the finish line on Friday night will take home $2,000. The checkered flag on Saturday night will mean $3,000 for the winner.

Friday night’s races will also feature four of the track’s five normal classes in action. Stock cars will be racing for a $300 top prize while hobby stocks and B-modifieds will be gearing it up for a $250 first place purse. The cruisers will run for $175.

Saturday night will feature all five classes in addition to the USMTS field. The prize monies will be even larger, with the stock car winner taking $400, B-mods and hobby stocks paying $350, Cruisers $175 and Ponies $125 to the winners.

“A large field of cars are expected in all classes as there is great excitement heading into this season,” said the track’s public relations director Ed Sheckler. “Promoter Todd Staley has added a great deal of money to the modified, stock car, B-mod and hobby stock purses this season. He is offering the best Saturday night purse and tow money of any track around plus the best points fund money of any track.”

The gates will open at Bentz GM Country Scotland County Speedway at 5:00 p.m. On Friday night hot laps will start at 6:30 p.m. with racing at 7:00 p.m. Hot laps will start at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday with the green flag falling on the opening heat race at 6:30 p.m.

Editor’s Note: The Memphis Democrat will not be publishing the RACE TRACKER special supplement in 2005. We will publish the race results on the sports page and will have a photographer at the track from time to time.
