Rec-Plex To Begin Gym Construction This Summer

Phase two of the proposed fitness center is set to get underway this summer as the Scotland County Rec-Plex Board has authorized the construction of a gymnasium addition to the facility located on Highway 136 in Memphis.

The group has okayed the construction of a 70x100 foot metal building to be located on the southeast corner of the current facility. The new addition will house a gym, as well as restrooms and storage space. It will be connected to the existing building by a breezeway but will also feature a separate entrance on the north side of the gym.

“We’ve been meeting at least every two weeks over the past several months to get this thing rolling,” said Tom Deberry. “We’re still finalizing the plans but the building itself has been bought and paid for.”

The roughly $50,000 purchase price for the Chief metal structure has been made possible by donations to the group’s Neighborhood Assistance Program. Donors earn 70-percent tax credits from the state of Missouri. The Rec-Plex was authorized to distribute just over $400,000 in tax credits, meaning it should be able to generate roughly $270,000 for the project if all the donations are made.

Prospective donors have until June 30th to make the offering to the community project as the NAP is in its third and final year. However, Deberry pointed out that donors may utilize their tax credits over an extended period of time and would not be limited to just this year’s taxes.

The $50,000 purchase price covers only the building itself and will not include concrete or installation costs. M & O Concrete has been contracted for the cement and Holt Construction will be installing the building.

Other added costs will include the rubber gym floor, which is expected to cost $25,000, or basically a third of the cost of a wooden gym floor. Deberry stated the group is still reviewing heating and cooling options as well as the plumbing specs for the new site.

“We are hoping to have this project complete by July or August and have some activities in there,” Deberry said.

In addition to basketball, the new facility will cater to volleyball and soccer and will offer indoor opportunities for batting practice and other sports.
