Gorin R-III Receives $99,773 DESE Technology Grant

The Gorin R-III School District has received a $99,773 grant for the 2004 -2005 school year from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education under the Title IID Enhancing Education through Technology program.

The Title IID Ed Tech grant program provided a total of $9 million this year to support education technologies in public schools across the state. Half of the funds are distributed to schools in formula grants and half via competitive grants. The competitive grant program targets projects that integrate technology with teacher training and curriculum development and establishes successful research-based instructional methods.

With support from the grant, Melinda Masden (3rd/4th grade), Holly Speer (5th/6th grade), and Ellen Kay (7th/8th grade) from Gorin R-III will participate in the states eMINTS (enhancing Missouris Instructional Networked Teaching Strategies) program that helps teachers learn to teach effectively in high-tech classrooms. Over the course of two years, teachers participate in over 200 hours of professional development that helps them integrate multimedia technology into inquiry-based, student centered, interdisciplinary, collaborative teaching practices that result in improved student performance. Expanded into a statewide program in 1999, eMINTS has proven effective in assisting students with achievement as measured by the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) tests.

The Title IID eMINTS grant proposals are prepared by principals, classroom teachers, and technology directors from throughout the state. The grant proposal from the Gorin R-III school district was prepared by Ellen Kay. This year, 149 proposals were submitted and, according to Department officials, 73 were funded for the 2004-2005 school year. With the new grants, eMINTS will be in place in over 220 districts and 800 classrooms this year. For more information about the Gorn R-III eMINTS project, contact Ellen Kay at 660-282-3282 or kaye@teachers.emints.org.

During the Parent Teacher Organization meeting on Monday, February 7, 2005, Ms. Kay presented a PowerPoint outline of the grant program to parents and students. Visitors then went to the other eMINTS classrooms where students demonstrated the technology and curriculum they used to their parents.
