Chamber Sets Dates For 2005 Events
The Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce held an organizational meeting January 18th at Java Jitters. The promotional group established dates for a number of the annual events sponsored by the chamber.
The customer appreciation Pancake Day has been scheduled for April 23rd. The free breakfast will be held at the Memphis Fire Station from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Chamber members also voted to host the second annual Ella Ewing Arts Festival on May 7th. Peanut Day was set for June 18th.
Representatives from the “Bring John Home” program also were present at the meeting to update chamber members on what historians are considering one of the last burial ceremonies for a Civil War veteran.
Lee Ann Russell and Brenda DeMarce, leaders in the local Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War group displayed commemorative T-shirts that are being sold to help offset costs for hosting the ceremony at the Memphis Cemetery.
Dr. Harlo Donelson was present and encouraged chamber members to help support the local school in a recycling contest being sponsored by the Northeast Missouri Solid Waste Management District. A financial reward is being offered to the school that collects the most recyclable goods. Donelson told members that there is a recycling trailer at the North Elementary School.
The next chamber meeting will be Thursday, February 10th at 6:00 p.m. at Java Jitters.
