Lady Tigers Fall Short In Upset Bid Of State-Ranked Green City
For three and a half quarters it looked like Scotland County might topple Green City from the Class 1 state rankings. The Lady Tigers outplayed the Gophers for much of the game. But it only took three minutes for all that to evaporate, as Green City rallied to take a 51-44 victory and secure its spot as the sixth-ranked team in the state.
Chelsea Rouse was scoring in threes down the stretch to secure the win for the visiting team. She hit a three pointer with 3:09 left in the game to break a 36 all tie. The senior guard then converted a pair of three-point plays as part of a 9-0 run by the Gophers that put the game away.
SCR-I led 13-7 after the first quarter of play. Green City cut the advantage to 20-19 at the intermission. The two teams played an even third period, each scoring nine points, to leave the Lady Tigers ahead 29-28 heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Rouse led all scorers with 25 points on the night. Jessica Ayers added 14 points for the Gophers.
Scotland County was led by Ali Fromm with 19 points. She was a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line. Valerie Crawford hit a pair of three pointers in the contest and finished with 10 points. The Lady Tigers played without Brittney Courtright who was in street clothes with a foot injury.
SCR-I dropped to 4-3 on the year and will next play in the Highland Tournament. Green City improved to 7-1 on the year.
