Lady Tigers Stop Schuyler County In Tourney Opener
A couple of big offensive spurts and solid defense throughout, has been the secret to the Scotland County girls basketball team’s early season success. The Lady Tigers followed the pattern again on December 6 in the opening round of the Putnam County Tourney. SCR-I bested Schuyler County 48-40.
Scotland County took a 10-9 lead over the Rams in the first period behind a solid opening act from Valerie Crawford. The senior had six points in the game’s first minutes.
The Lady Tigers took charge of the game with a huge second quarter. SCR-I did much of its damage from the free-throw line, hitting 9 of 11 from the charity stripe en route to 21 points in the period. Ali Fromm had eight points during the run that put Scotland County on top 31-21 at the break.
The margin grew to 41-29 heading into the final quarter before Schuyler County rallied to make a game of it. Fromm hit a key three pointer late in the contest to end any chance of a Rams rally.
The junior guard led Scotland County in scoring with 15 points. Crawford chimed in with 13 points while Ashlee Frederick aided the cause with seven points. SCR-I got points from seven different players in a balanced attack.
