Lady Tigers Returning Plenty Of Firepower
While no one is saying the Lady Tigers won’t miss departed seniors Jessie Cotton, Brandi Mallett and Becky Miller, it’s hard for the coaches, players and fans alike not to be a little excited about the upcoming 2004-05 season.
SCR-I returns three starters from last year’s squad that finished 15-13. The Lady Tigers bring back seven players that saw significant varsity playing time last year and also is adding quality depth off a successful junior varsity squad from a year ago.
“Right now we have six seniors and five juniors on varsity so we are going to be an experienced team,” said second-year Coach Kelli Swearingen.
The cast of returning starters is led by Ali Fromm. The junior guard was a first-team all-conference performer last year, averaging 15.6 points per contest.
Fellow junior Brittney Courtright came off the bench last year for SCR-I in a role designed by Coach Swearingen to give the team a needed offensive boost. The move worked for Courtright and the team as the post player averaged 6.6 points a night as well as a team-high 5.2 rebounds a game to earn all-conference honorable mention.
Point guard Ashlee Frederick, another of the team’s talented junior class, returns to run the show. She’ll be looked on to help replace the 10 points a night that Cotton contributed to the offense.
Angie Bulen likely will step into the starting center role vacated by Mallett. The junior will be one of the teams leading rebounders and is a workhorse in the paint and on the glass. She split time last year with Mallett.
Seniors Valerie Crawford and Rebecca Consbrock split time at three-guard position and give the team all kinds of options. Consbrock is one of the team’s better perimeter defenders while Crawford offers versatility on offense where she can hit the jump shot or post up equally effectively.
Super-sub Jamie Fuller, the final member of the Fab Five junior class, can play any of the perimeter positions and gives the team a scoring punch as well as a good defender.
SCR-I will have a pair of seniors to provide depth in the post position with Kayla Ebeling and Jacqui Drummond giving coach Swearingen some options in the paint. Fellow seniors Ashley Ellison and Leslie Duley will be part of the guard rotation.
