Tigers ĎSwimí Away From Schuyler County With 7-0 Win

The Scotland County swim team defeated Schuyler County 7-0 Friday night in Queen City. Wait, SCR-I doesnít have a swim team. It was the Tigers football team that swam away with the win. SCR-I could have replaced the pads and helmets with snorkels and fins as heavy rains just before halftime turned the field into a muddy mess that prevented either team from mounting much offense.
The Tigers got all the scoring they needed early in the second quarter when Jared Shelley broke a 49-yard touchdown run down the left side of the field. Receiver Matt Wickert made two key blocks to free Shelley for the score. Zach McBee made the point after attempt to make the score 7-0 with 9:17 left in the second quarter.
High winds all evening prevented much passing from either team. But when the rains started pelting the field minutes before the intermission the weather took its toll on the ground game as well.
The Tigers had the ball as the storm climaxed and sent the sparse crowd fleeing for cover. When the rain and wind subsided minutes later, the fans saw Schuyler County with its best chance to score. The wind knocked down an SCR-I punt attempt and left the Rams in good field position. But a pass to the end zone slipped through the receiversí hands helping preserve the SCR-I lead.
The game got off to an unusual start as the two teams had identical opening possessions.
The Tigers defense held Schuyler County to just three plays and forced a punt. But the kick hit an SCR-I blocker and the Rams recovered the fumble.
Schuyler County marched downfield but the Tigers defense held the Rams on downs just 15 yards from the end zone.
The Tigers then went three-and-out on offense and were forced to punt. The Schuyler County receiver fumbled the kick and Wickert pounced on the loose ball. The Tigers pushed the ball to the 15-yard line but turned it over on downs.
Schuyler County had a scoring opportunity to start the second period but McBee sacked the Rams quarterback on fourth down to get the Tigers the ball back. That set up Shelleyís TD run.
The second half was brutal for both offenses. The Tigers were hampered by a pair of turnovers. Shelley broke a 52-yard run late in the contest but the Tigers were turned away from the end zone.
The Tigers managed just four first downs the entire game. Shelley ran for 154 yards on 20 attempts with two carries accounting for 101 of those yards. B.J. Houghton carried the ball five times for 15 yards and Tim Robinson had seven yards on three attempts before leaving with an injury.
Marcus Shalley completed two of nine pass attempts for 26 yards. Wickert had both catches. Shelley threw one pass and it was intercepted.
The Tigers defense held the Rams to 170 yards of total offense and just nine first downs.
Chris Calhoun completed three of 15 passes for 36 yards.
Justin Buckallew was the leading rusher with 50 yards on seven attempts. Tyler Green carried the ball 13 times for 40 yards and Travis Vincent ran 14 times for 13 yards.
Houghton led the defense with 12 tackles including two for losses. Devin Mauck made 11 stops while Shelley, McBee and Michael Garnett finished with nine tackles.
The victory places the Tigers destiny in their own hands. SCR-I improved to 2-0 in district play heading into the season finale November 5th in Memphis against Knox County. A win would give the team its second straight district title and set up a November 10th playoff game in Memphis. A loss, combined with a Schuyler County victory over North Shelby would send the process into a complicated tie-breaker, based on margin of victory. The Rams would likely have the advantage, as they defeated Knox County 18-0 while SCR-I beat the Rams just 7-0. The tie-breaker would ultimately depend on Friday nightís scores.
