Lady Tigers Bring Home Second Place From Tourney
Rain canceled the first try at the NCMC softball tournament and then backed up the start times for the rescheduled contests October 2. But the event proved well worth the wait for Scotland County, which brought home a second-place trophy and proved to itself that it could play with reigning state champions Putnam County.
After the Midgets blasted SCR-I 14-0 earlier in the year, the Lady Tigers took Putnam County to extra frames in the tournament championship before falling 4-1 in eight innings.
Scotland County opened the bracket play with a 3-2 win over Smithville. SCR-I jumped on top with two tallies in the first. Ali Fromm started the game with a triple. Jamie Fuller plated her with a single. She then crossed the plate on a base hit from Kirsten Johnston.
Fromm scored the winning run in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 deadlock. Fuller delivered her second RBI of the game to send SCR-I to the semifinals.
Consbrock was the winning pitcher. She allowed four hits and two walks while striking out five.
Game two was a bit easier as the Lady Tigers bats carried the team to a 10-4 win over St. Joseph-Benton.
Again SCR-I got things going in the opening frame, tallying three runs. The Lady Tigers added the lead in each of the five innings.
Consbrock was 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Fuller was also 3-3 while Monica Schmitz, Johnston, Kellyn Wickert and Fromm each added two hits in the victory.
Scotland County had a chance to bring home the top hardware in the title tilt. Consbrock was nearly perfect in regulation, allowing just one base runner through six innings.
Scotland County had a chance to win it in the seventh inning, getting the bases loaded with just one out. But the winning run was stranded at third base.
Putnam County broke through in the eighth to score the 4-1 win.
