Eagles Hand Lady Tigers First Conference Loss

A muddled conference title picture got a little more clouded as the Scotland County softball team proved an old adage, that it’s tough to beat a team three times in one season.

SCR-I found this out the hard way September 14 at Edina as Knox County handed the Lady Tigers a 4-0 defeat to give Scotland County its first league loss of the year.

The Lady Tigers had bested the Eagles twice prior to the conference match-up, winning a 2-1 contest in Memphis early in the year before a 3-2 victory over the host squad in the first round of the Knox County Tournament.

The third time proved to be the charm for reigning conference MVP Katie McMahon. The Eagles hurler was nearly perfect in her third try at SCR-I.

“She was really pumped up and ready for this game,” said SCR-I Coach Terri Slaughter. “We knew early on she was going to be tough to score on.”

In their two wins over Knox County, the Lady Tigers had gotten to McMahon early, scoring four of the five runs in the first inning. SCR-I tried the plan again, but left a runner stranded at third base in the opening at bat.

That was as close as SCR-I would get to scoring. McMahon retired 10 straight from that point. The Lady Tigers got only one more base runner the entire game. McMahon then retired the final 11 batters in order to finish the one-hitter.

Her counterpart was nearly as impressive. Rebecca Consbrock allowed just five hits. However defensive miscues allowed Knox County to score twice in the second inning. The Eagles added insurance runs in the third and sixth frame, both of these runs were unearned as well.

Consbrock struck out 10 batters in six innings of work while walking two.

The loss left a traffic jam near the top of the league standings. Going into the week of September 20, Putnam County remained the only undefeated team in conference play. SCR-I, Knox County, North Shelby and Clark County all had just one loss in league play.
