Local Golfers Help Raise Nearly $2,500 in 14th Annual Edina Cancer Tournament A beautiful Sunday morning greeted 27 teams of golfers in their effort to continue the fight against cancer with their golf clubs in the 14th annual Knox County American Cancer Championship Golf Tournament at the Edina Country Club.
Serious golfers, as well as “weekend duffers” teamed up to net $2,497 for the American Cancer Society to continue in the investment in the fight against cancer.
Seventeen men’s teams and 10 ladies teams participated in the event for a total of 108 golfers. Registration for the men was 7 a.m. with an 8 a.m. tee off and the ladies registered at 11:30 for a 1:30 tee off. Each participant received a gift packet of a sleeve of golf balls, tees, ball marker, and pen compliments of the American Cancer Society.
At noon the ladies of the local American Cancer Society served a delicious complimentary lunch to the lady golfers before they began their afternoon of golf. The men were served lunch after they had finished their 18 holes of golf and the ladies had taken over the course.
Winning the Men’s Championship Flight were Ron Sayres, Rick Hubble, Donnie Hubble and Mike Hayes.
Winning the Men’s A Flight were Roger Gipson, Tony Marble, J.L. Brenizer and Nick Brenizer.
The Men’s B Flight winners were Jason Kincaid, Patrick Martindale, David Couch and Jerry Don Foreman.
In the afternoon of golf the Championship Flight Team was Marge DeRosear, Dottie Kriegshauser, Sarah Spalding and Lila Hilgeford.
Winning the Ladies A Flight was Patty Klocke, Gaila Simmons, Janice Smith and Beulah Grant.
The Ladies B Flight Winners were Pam Ausmus, Kari Jo Ausmus, Sam Leckbee and Bridgett Nunan.
The above teams, who have won at the local level, now have the opportunity to advance to state and national championship.
The grand prize, a sand wedge autographed by Tom Watson and donated by Assured Management Company of Kansas City was won by Dorothy Parrish.
An instruction book written by and autographed by Tom Watson was won by Bobby Mauck and also was donated by Assured Management Company of Kansas City.
The special drawing for chip-in prize of a $50 Bond, donated by Don Harrison Insurance, was won by Jerome Kurth.
Winners in the special raffle of the 3 $100 bills, donated by the Citizens Bank of Edina, were as follows: Roscoe Coram of Kirksville, Michael Rich, Shelbyville, and Mary Young of Memphis.
The following are the “hole” contest winners for the tournament: #1 – Longest Putt, Mike See and Sarah Spalding; #2 – Longest Drive, Mike Hayes and Kari Jo Ausmus; #3 – Closest to Pin on Second Shot, Brad Barnes and Mary Young; #4 – Longest Putt, Jordan Shultz and Leslie Clark; #5 – Closest to Rock off Tee, John Harlow and Mary Kriegshauser; #6 – Closest to Pin off Tee, Darrell Simmons and Gaylene Morgret; #7 – Drive Closest to Marker off Tee, Alan Peavler and Monica Zahn; #8 – Closest to Pin off Tee, J.L. Brenizer and Sarah Spalding; #9 – Longest Drive on Fairway, Eric Klocke and Terri Slaughter; #9 – Closest to Bridge off Tee (ladies only), Susan Kriegshauser.
There was a special “fun” prize on #6 hole for the men, a 1917 golf bag with two sleeves of golf balls donated by Kenny and June Kline’s “This and That” that was won by Marcus Stauffer.
The team with the fewest putts was the team of Francie Delaney, Mary Delaney, Annie Fisher and Jeanette Gibbons.
