Eggleston, Mallett Lead Missouri Softball All-Stars To Win In Illinois

Going into the July 4 Missouri vs. Illinois all-star softball game, Missouri Coach Brian Wosman of Palmyra thought the Illinois squad had the advantage with stronger pitching and the fact they were just coming off the spring season while Missouriís season ended last fall.

Scotland Countyís Sara Eggleston proved him wrong on both accounts as she led the Missouri team to a 4-0 victory in game one of the double-header.

The former Lady Tigers hurler pitched a complete game shutout to earn the win. Eggleston fanned eight Illinois all-stars and allowed just two hits.

Eggleston was not rusty after the fall season as she has been playing for the Columbia Rattlers 18-and-under traveling team and has pitched a dozen games this summer as she is gearing up to start her collegiate career at Culver-Stockton College in the fall.

True to form Eggleston passed much of the credit for her performance on to her teammates, praising the defense and timely hitting of her fellow Missouri all-stars.

The hurler also gave credit to her former battery mate and fellow all-star Brandi Mallett. Mallett caught the first game, giving Eggleston a familiar target.

Both girls contributed to the 4-0 victory with their bats as well. Eggleston had a pair of hits and scored a run in the first game. Mallett was 1-3 at the plate and stole a base in the winning effort.

Missouriís second pitcher, Kelsey Stout of Mark Twain did not fare as well in the night cap as Illinois exploded for 16 hits en route to a 10-2 win.

Eggleston played left field in game two and was 0-2 in the cleanup spot in the lineup. She did steal a base and score one of the teamís two runs.

Libertyís Sara Ormond was the winning pitcher in game two, allowing just three hits to help Illinois gain the split.

The 2004 Missouri vs. Illinois Senior Softball Salute was the inaugural game in what promoters hope will be an annual contest between the softball all-stars from each state.

The double-header was hosted Sunday, July 4 at Harry Phillips Field, home of Quincy University in Quincy, IL.
