Keokuk, SCR-I Take Titles At Gorin Tournament

Gorin School held its annual fifth and sixth grade basketball tournament March 8 – 13. Teams participating were Keokuk Christian Academy, Wyaconda, Luray, Scotland County third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, and sixth grade, Clark County fifth grade, and the host, Gorin.

In first round games, Keokuk girls defeated the little Scotland County third grade girls, Keokuk boys came out ahead of Scotland County fifth grade boys, Gorin girls won over Luray, and Gorin boys headed toward the championship side by outscoring Scotland County fourth grade boys.

On Tuesday night, Scotland County sixth grade girls won over schoolmates Scotland County fourth graders, Clark County fifth grade boys defeated Wyaconda, Wyaconda girls outscored Scotland County fifth graders, and rounding out the night was Scotland County sixth graders over Luray boys.

In consolation semifinals, Scotland County third graders bowed out to the Scotland County fourth graders. These two teams were originally together, but Marie Duzan divided up the two grades to fill up the bracket when a team dropped out. These young girls show a lot of potential as future Tigers. The fifth grade boys from Scotland County also conceded to Wyaconda as Wyaconda won the right to play for consolation. In the next two games, the fifth grade girls and the fourth grade boys from Scotland County won over both the girls and boys teams from Luray.

In a championship semifinal game, Scotland County sixth grade girls gained the right to play for first place by downing Keokuk Christian Academy. The Keokuk boys narrowly defeated the Clark County fifth graders, the Gorin girls won over Wyaconda, and the Scotland County sixth grade boys downed the host, Gorin, with all winners moving toward the championship games.

Friday night games featured trophy games. The Scotland County fifth grade girls earned the consolation prize by outscoring Scotland County fourth graders by a score of 13 to six. Katie Miller outdid all players with her eight points for the fifth graders.

In boys’ consolation play, Wyaconda tallied 32 points while holding Scotland County fourth graders to seven to claim the trophy. Cody Webster and Andrew Humes combined for 22 points for the winners.

The Wyaconda girls won over Keokuk for the third place trophy. The score was 27 to 18 with Nicole Martin carrying the load for Wyaconda by making 19 points.

Saturday’s first game featured the Gorin boys playing Clark County for third place. Boys on both teams contributed balanced scoring. Eight boys from Clark County scored with Britten Gray leading the pack with 13. The Gorin boys got points from Sabe Sears, Will See, Matt Tague, and Lee Tague, but lost in the effort by a score of 49 to 20.

In the girls’ championship game, Scotland County sixth graders held off the Gorin fifth graders to win by a score of 21 to 19. The score was tied at the end of three quarters and again at the end of four when Aimee Dale banked in a three-pointer for Gorin to tie the game in the last seconds of regulation play. In overtime, McKinsey Cooley made the only basket to secure the win for Scotland County. Josie Holt outscored all players by making 12 points for the winners. Aimee Dale led Gorin with nine.

The spectators also got their money’s worth when Keokuk Christian Academy played Scotland County’s sixth grade boys. At the end of the first quarter, Scotland County led by one point and at the half the score was tied. Again at the end of three quarters, the difference was only one point with Keokuk in the lead. At the end of four quarters the score was tied leading to overtime play. Keokuk’s boys held off Scotland County to earn the title by a score of 41 to 38. Elijah Seay bucketed 21 points including three in overtime in the winning effort. Gabs Welker added 16. Brandon Garnett led Scotland County with 15 points with Kyle Shelley adding nine.

Sportsmanship plaques were awarded to the Wyaconda girls and the Luray boys.
