Stingy SCR-I Defense Helps Lady Tigers Celebrate On Senior Night

On senior night, the final home game of the year, one would expect a lot of celebrating. While there were plenty of festivities before and after the games, when it came time to play the final regular season game of the year February 27 in Memphis, the Scotland County Lady Tigers were all about business.

Coach Kelli Swearingen was generous with the minutes, giving all three of her seniors plenty of playing time in their final home game of their high school career.

ďThese three girls put four years into the program so we wanted to send them out on a high note,Ē Swearingen stated. ďThey had a new coach this year, and that meant changes in the program, but they stuck with it and we had a great year.Ē

The hospitality however was not carried over for the opposition. As a matter of fact the Lady Tigers were down right stingy, holding Brookfield to just 21 points in a 46-21 victory.

The seniors drew the bulk of the applause when the game got underway but it was a pair of sophomores who built a 12-4 lead for SCR-I. Ali Fromm and Ashlee Frederick combined for all 12-first quarter points, including three, three pointers.

Twelve proved to be the Lady Tigers lucky number, as the team scored exactly a dozen points in the second and third period as well.

Brittney Courtright and Fromm each had a pair of buckets in the second period to build a 24-11 advantage at the break.

Senior Jessie Cotton drilled a three pointer to open the third period. Rebecca Consbrock and Jamie Fuller each had four points in the quarter as the lead grew to 36-15.

Scotland County closed out the night by outscoring Brookfield 10-6 in the final eight minutes. Five different Lady Tigers scored as Coach Swearingen began resting the starters heading into the district tournament March 3.

ďWe got a lot of kids in the game tonight and nobody had to play too many minutes,Ē Swearingen said. ďSo weíre heading into districts well rested, healthy and ready to go with a couple wins in a row under our belt.Ē

The Lady Tigers ended the season with a 14-12 mark and 4-3 in the Tri-Rivers Conference that guaranteed at least a tie for third place in the league.

Ali Fromm led SCR-I with 14 points. Courtright and Consbrock each added six points in the win.
