Indians Upset SCR-I In Consolation Finals Of Highland Tournament

At points during the consolation trophy game of the Highland Tournament the contest more resembled a football game between Tri-Rivers Conference opponents Scotland County and Clark County instead of basketball.

Both teams struggled offensively in a first period that ultimately saw each team kick three field goals and leave the score knotted at 9-9. Scotland County trailed for most of the opening quarter before Danny Roach connected on a three pointer in the final seconds on a nice inbounds play.

While it wasnít fumbles or interceptions, turnovers did haunt the Tigers in the second period as Clark County took advantage of a series of empty possessions by the Tigers to build a 26-18 lead at the intermission.

The two teams traded buckets in the third period with the Tigers never able to get on track and cut into the deficit. Jared Shelley gave the team a boost off the bench. His driving basket to close the quarter made the score 36-30 in favor of the Indians.

Nick Oldham opened the fourth period with a hoop on a drive to the basket that made the score 36-32. But that was as close as SCR-I could get.

Frustration set in during the fourth period as the Tigers simply could not get on track. The fouls began to mount for SCR-I as play continued to be physical on both ends.

A three-point play by Shelley with 3:51 left to play was not enough to get the momentum back for the Tigers who saw the deficit grow to double digits in the final minutes as Clark County went on to the 51-39 victory.

Clint Cottrell and Shelley each had nine points to pace the Tigers offense. Aaron Dale topped the scorebook with 10 points on the night. Cody Prostman led Clark County with 14 points. The loss drops SCR-I to 4-6 on the year while the Indians improve to 2-6.

In other tournament action it was Palmyra beating Highland 49-44 in the boys third place contest. Canton bested Hannibal 55-36 in the girls consolation game. On Saturday night it was Clark County easily outdistancing Palmyra 70-42 in the girls championship game. In the boys title tilt it was Canton remaining unbeaten on the year by defeating Hannibal 44-42 to give the Wildcats the first Highland Tournament Title in school history.
