Charles J. Marlow, 80, of Memphis, MO, died at his home, August 7, 2004.

He was born December 16, 1923, in Kirksville, Adair County, MO, to Hazel Edith Martin Marlow and John H. Marlow.

He was a graduate of Memphis High School, class of 1942. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army from February 6, 1943 to November 30, 1945.

He married Mary Jo Dierks on September 6, 1947, in the Presbyterian Church in Memphis, MO.

After the war Charles and his dad started the Sinclair Oil Company in Memphis, MO, having a tank wagon service for 25 years. Charles was one of the founders of the Scotland County Rural Fire Department. He lived and loved the fire department. He was also a partner in the Coast to Coast Store in Memphis. Charles worked for the Missouri Department of Agriculture, Division of Weight and Measure until retirement. He enjoyed woodworking and working with the Antique Fairs. Charles dearly loved people, being around them and visiting with them. Charles was a member of the Memphis Masonic Lodge No. 16 A.F. & A.M. since 1946. He was also a member of the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post 4958 V.F.W.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo of Memphis, MO; one son, John Walter Walt Marlowe and wife, Linda of Memphis, MO; one daughter, Sara Jo Phillips and husband, Robert of Memphis, MO; four grandchildren, Shawn Michael Phillips and wife, Kristal, Brandi Jo Phillips and fianc, Jardin Fuller, Jeremiah Kurtis Marlowe and Joshua Brinton Marlowe; one great-granddaughter, Baileigh McKena Phillips.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; a sister in infancy; and a grandson, Jonathan.

A Masonic Service will be conducted by the Memphis Masonic Lodge No. 16, A.F. & A.M. on Wednesday, August 11, 2004, at 7:00 p.m. Family visitation will follow.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 12, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. in the Memphis Funeral Home, Memphis, MO, conducted by Pastor Dan Hite. Ann Luther will be the accompanist and Lori Fulk, the vocalist. Burial will follow in the Memphis Cemetery. Graveside military service will be given by the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial V.F.W. Post 4958. Casket bearers will be Aaron Dannenhauer, David Long, Dennis Robertson, Roger Gosney, Tom Matlock, and Carl Trueblood. Honorary casket bearers will be members of the Memphis and Scotland County Rural Fire Departments. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Northeast Missouri, American Cancer Society, Memphis and Scotland County Fire Departments or the Antique Fair Association. Memphis Funeral Home, Memphis, MO, is in charge of arrangements.
