Eldon Lee Simerl, 86, of Memphis, MO, passed away July 27, 2004, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO.

The son of John Wilson and Susan Viola (Miller) Simerl, he was born July 8, 1918, in Schuyler County, MO.

Eldon lived in the Brushy community and attended the Brushy school. He attended the Downing High School.

He married Lillian Stone in Queen City, MO on December 11, 1937. To this union four children were born, Carol, Merrill, Larry, and Terry.

Eldon began his career as a farmer and drove a truck for MFA in Downing, MO. He was a bulldozer operator for Charles Peck and Harvey Musgrove for many years.

He left his talent for the work he loved in many ponds and construction work in Scotland County and the surrounding area. One of his many accomplishments was the large part he had in the construction of the Edina, MO Lake.

Eldon loved his family and looked forward to them gathering on Christmas Eve.

He was a member of the Downing Christian Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; three sisters, Nora Baker and husband David, Opal Rood and husband Fred, Thelma McClellan and husband L.J.; two brothers, Floyd and wife Madeline and Junior and wife Marja; two infant sisters, Emily and Wilma; and a great-granddaughter, Mindy Ford.

Survivors include his children, Carol Scurlock and husband, Don of Bloomfield, IA, Merrill Sides and husband, Don of Muscatine, IA, Larry Simerl and wife, Sherry of Agency, IA, and Terry Simerl and wife, Patty of Memphis, MO; two sisters, Cecil Snodgrass of Memphis, MO and Irene McClellan of Moline, KS; a brother-in-law, Jeyrl Stone and wife Denise of Memphis, MO; eleven grandchildren, Jerry Scurlock and wife Margaret, Joy Aylward and husband Scott, Donetta and husband John Brotherton, Debbie and husband Rich Conard, Doug Sides, Darren and wife Leigh, Derrick and wife Shelly, Dee Dee and husband Randy Gerdts, Dusty Sides and friend Sara, Mike Simerl and wife Anita, Scott Simerl and wife Jackie; 17 great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Laura Aylward, John and Jennifer Scurlock, Devon and Meagen Sides, Stephanie and Steve Ford, Drew Sides, Demi, Ian, and Nathan Sides, Taylor and Quinton Gerdts, Dyllyn, Jordyn, and Ashtyn Simerl; one great-great-granddaughter, Katelyn Parsons; and many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held July 30, 2004, in the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO, with Pastor Larry Smith officiating. Special music was provided by Ann Luther, organist, and Schelle Cooley, soloist. Serving as pallbearers were Jerry Scurlock, Mike Simerl, Doug Sides, Darren Sides, Derrick Sides, and Dusty Sides. Honorary bearers were Scott Simerl, Jennifer and John Scurlock, Kim and Laura Aylward, Devon and Meagen Sides, Stephanie and Stephen Ford, Drew Sides, Demi, Ian and Nathan Sides, Quinton and Taylor Gerdts, and Dyllyn, Jordyn, and Ashtyn Simerl. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO. Memorials may be made to the Memphis Recreation Center (Pool Hall) and may be left at or mailed to Gerth Funeral Service, 115 S. Main, Memphis, MO 63555. Condolences may be sent to the Simerl family via email at Arrangements were handled by Gerth Funeral Service from their Memphis chapel.
