OPAL L. KIRKPATRICK

Opal L. Kirkpatrick, 91, of Memphis, MO, died on June 20, 2004, at Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, MO.
She was born May 21, 1913, on the family farm northeast of Memphis, MO. Opal was the eldest daughter of Sturlin and Yuba Garrett.
At age nine, Opal and her younger sister, Alta, wearing organdy dresses made by their mother, were baptized by Reverend G. Lolin Eaton at the First Christian Church in Memphis, MO. Opal attended Pleasant Hill School and then graduated from Memphis High School in 1931. Upon graduation, she taught two years at the same one-room country school, Pleasant Hill. The following 1933-34 school year, she attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman University) and then taught five more years at Center Point School.
Opal was united in marriage to Harold E. Kirkpatrick on July 30, 1938 at the church parsonage by Ralph (MG) Smith in Kirksville, MO. Attendants were her sister and brother-in-law, Alta and Glen Myers.
Opal was hired by President T.C. Smith of the Bank of Memphis as a teller and bookkeeper. She, as well as Harold, worked at the bank for a number of years. Opal and Harold then worked the family farm north of Memphis.
Opal served in many capacities at the Christian Church Ė Deaconess, Sunday school teacher, Christian Women Workers officer, and other church work as needed. She took an active role in her childrenís activities, particularly as a 4-H leader.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in November of 2003.
She is survived by son, Neal Kirkpatrick and wife, Dawn of Lake Mary, FL; daughter, Nola Ann Boyd and husband, Joe of St. Charles, IL; three grandchildren, Joseph Kirk Boyd of St. Charles, IL, Dr. Brian Patrick Boyd and his wife, Dr. Michelle Boyd of Downers Grove, IL, and Ann Elizabeth Kirkpatrick of Tallahassee, FL; and one sister, Alta Myers of Joplin, MO, along with many nieces and nephews.
The family has suggested memorials be made to the Shiloh Christian Childrenís Ranch and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.
Funeral services were held June 23, 2004, at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with Bro. Jack Sumption officiating. Musicians were Ann Luther, organist, and Angela Westhoff, soloist. Pallbearers were David Kirkpatrick, Steve Kirkpatrick, Philip Kirkpatrick, Jeff Dyer, Buddy Davison, Todd Good, and Dale Musgrove. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO. Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, was in charge of arrangements.
