HELEN V. McCUNE
Helen Verlee McCune, 83, of Kirksville, MO, formerly of Downing, MO, passed away June 3, 2004, in the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO.
The daughter of Lawrence Edward and Bertha Josephine (Stevens) Jones, she was born on November 27, 1920, in rural Downing, MO.
Helen was a graduate of the Downing High School in Downing, MO.
She married Fred Clarkson McCune on July 3, 1940 and to this union two daughters, Kay and Karen, were born.
Survivors include her two daughters, Kay Reno and husband, Carl of Ottumwa, IA, and Karen Gardner and husband, Larry of Kirksville, MO; five grandchildren, Toni and Fred Moore, Kelly and Shannon Long, Carla and David Ogden, Lisa and Mark Hunter and Donna and Jeff Merideth; eight great-grandchildren, Preston Moore and wife, Amanda, Megan Long, Tanner Ogden, Tori Ogden, Colbi Hunter, Coltyn Hunter, Drew Merideth and Ryan Merideth; one great-great-grandson, Payton Moore; one step-great-granddaughter, Brooke Henage; two sisters, Laverne Ellis of Eaton, CO, and Jan Bissell of Lakewood, CO; one brother-in-law, Paul McCune and wife, Dee; one sister-in-law, Mabel Jones of Zephyr Hills, FL; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and neighbors.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on January 10, 2004; one great-granddaughter, Marissa Merideth; one son-in-law, Ronald Long; one sister, Ada Odessa Jones; two brothers, Luel Edward Jones and Georgie Leo Jones.
Helen was a member of the Coffey Christian Church.
She and her husband, Fred owned and operated a grocery store in Downing, MO from 1940 through 1976.
Helen will be sadly missed by her family and friends, as she was a very important part of their lives.
Funeral services were held June 6, 2004, at the Downing Christian Church with Larry Smith, pastor of the church officiating. Music was provided by organist Betty Anderson and soloist, Jan Green. Pallbearers were Kelly Long, Preston Moore, Mark Hunter, Fred Moore, David Ogden and Jeff Merideth. Memorials have been established for the American Cancer Society or the Downing Christian Church. Burial was in the Downing City Cemetery, Downing, MO. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Downing, MO.
