MARGUERITE E. McLELAND

Marguerite Eva McLeland, 99, of Arbela died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis.
She was born the eldest daughter of Gilbert and Jessie Rugh Jones on January 11, 1905, near Prairie View in rural Scotland County.
On October 5, 1935, she married Craig McLeland. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1983. A son and daughter were born to this union.
Marguerite attended grade school at the Elm Grove rural school in Scotland County, and high school at Cantril, Iowa, graduating as the valedictorian of the Class of 1924. She also attended Kirksville State Teachers College at Kirksville, MO. Marguerite taught school for 11 years at Scotland County, Missouri and seven years at Van Buren County, Iowa. She served as the office secretary for the Scotland County Farm Bureau, retiring in 1976.
At an early age, she joined the Mt. Olive Methodist Church in rural Scotland County, and later transferred her membership to the Arbela United Methodist Church.
She was a charter member of the Charlotte Harrison Boone Tent #20 Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. Her entire life was spent in Scotland County, Missouri and Van Buren County, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three brothers, Glen H. Jones, Lynn G. Jones and an infant brother; two sisters, Helen Vehslage and Mae Powell; and her son-in-law, Marion Aylward.
She is survived by her children: Joanne Aylward and Dale R. McLeland, both of Arbela; grandchildren: Michael Aylward of Arbela and Ellen Aylward of Memphis; a sister, Minnie Decker of Kalona, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, June 3, 2004, at the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis with Rev. David Hartsfield and Rev. Dan Hite officiating. Her nephews served as pallbearers. Burial was in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Cantril, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Arbela United Methodist Church, the Providence Cemetery, or the Prairie View Cemetery.
