Roy McDaniel, 89, of Lockwood, MO, formerly of Memphis, MO, passed away February 22, 2004, at the Good Shepard Nursing Home, Lockwood, MO.
Roy was born January 7, 1915, in Scotland County, MO, a son of John Wm. and Ellen (Luke) McDaniel.
He married Ilene Overfield on June 27, 1942, and they were married for 59 years. She preceded him in death in 2001. To this union two children were born who survive, Patty Shelley and husband, Danny of N. Richland Hills, TX, and Gerald McDaniel of Lamar, MO; granddaughters, Kimberly Shelley of Lincoln, NE, and Brenda Miller and husband, Erik of Lamar, MO; and two great-granddaughters, Brianna and Gabrielle Miller.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, wife and seven sisters and seven brothers.
Roy spent most of his life in Scotland County, MO, except for his years in the military. He was a farmer for many years and especially loved his horses. He also worked for the city of Memphis and for the county. He worked several years for the Ammunition Plant at Burlington, IA.
Roy spent four years and four months in the Army during World War II, serving overseas in the Philippines and New Guinea. He is believed to be the most decorated soldier from the state of Missouri from World War II.
Funeral services will be held at the Memphis Funeral Home, Memphis, MO, on Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. James Parker, vocalist, will be accompanied on the keyboard by Joan Hinds. Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Interment will be at the Lawn Ridge Cemetery, north of Memphis, MO. Casket bearers will be Phil Duley, Jeff Dyer, Don Norton, Stacy Westhoff, Scott Westhoff and Jerry Stead. Memorials may be made to the Lawn Ridge Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to the funeral home at 337 South Market Street, Memphis, MO 63555. Memphis Funeral Home, Memphis, MO is handling the arrangements.
