By Chris Feeney - Memphis Democrat

(DOWNING, MO October 29, 2004) Less than two weeks after a commuter jet crashed near the Kirksville Regional Airport killing 13 people, a second plane has gone down in rural northeast Missouri.

A single engine plane crashed in rural Schuyler County, roughly seven miles south of the small town of Downing. The accident occurred Friday, October 29 at approximately 8:35 p.m. during the middle of high winds and thunderstorms that were pelting the region. A witness reportedly saw the plane spiral out of the sky and crash into the hilly ground several hundred feet off the blacktop roadway.

The Downing Fire Department, the Schuyler County Sheriff's Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol are on the scene at the Doug Poe farm, which is located near the intersection of Routes A and D in the northeast Missouri community. Law enforcement officials from Scotland County are also assisting in the investigation, as the crash occurred just a few miles west of the county line.

Ambulance personnel from both counties are also on the scene, but initial reports are there are no survivors. Officials on the scene indicated there could have been as many as three or four people on the plane.

The crash site has been closed except for members of the responding fire department and law enforcement officers. These officers indicated the scene would be secured overnight with a complete investigation beginning first thing Saturday morning with the arrival of the National Transportation Safety Board.

According to KTVO Channel 3,the Great Lakes Region Headquarters of the Federal Aviation Administration reported the plane is believed to be a Beechcraft A36 that had departed from South Dakota with a destination in Indiana, but the FAA did not return phone calls to confirm this.

On October 19 a Corporate Airlines jet crashed near the Kirksville Regional Airport killing 13 of the 15 people on board. The second crash site is approximately 15 miles northeast of Kirksville.
