Bring John Home Project To Host Civil-War-Period Costume Review

In preparation for the May 28th burial of the Last Civil War Union Veteran, John P. Byrne, The Bring John Home Project will sponsor on October 30th, at the Memphis Theatre in Memphis, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. a Civil War clothing program presented by Jean Warren of James Country Mercantile. Her program will be a broad overview of civilian and military clothing and customs of the Civil War era. It will include illustrations of original clothing as well as photographs from the period, and examples of reproduction fabrics, which can be utilized to produce reproduction garments. Examples of reproduction clothing will also be shown. There will also be items available for purchase: patterns for making the reproduction clothing, books on clothing for both men and women, and accessories such as gloves, suspenders, jewelry, stockings, etc.

Jean is a frequent speaker at Civil War reenactments and other history-oriented groups. Her topics include clothing of the period, fabrics and designs of the 19th century, quilts and other comforts of the Civil War, and civilian life during the border wars of Missouri-Kansas. She has also written articles for Citizenís Companion, a leading publication for civilian reenactors.

Jean and her husband, Del own and operate James Country Mercantile, a retail firm based in Liberty, MO. Started in 1986, James Country serves the Civil War and 19th century living history community Ė carrying a wide variety of clothing, information, patterns and accessories to recreate aspects of the 19th century, both military and civilian. In addition to James Country, Jean is a member of Friends of the Anderson House (a civilian living history group supporting the Lexington, MO Battlefield State Historic Site) and has also been a laundress attached to Elliottís Scouts (a Missouri Confederate dismounted cavalry reenacting unit).

Everyone interested in getting involved with the Bring John Home Project is encouraged to attend this program. A free-will donation will be taken at the door to cover expenses for the program.
