Area Chambers of Commerce Join Forces To Host Fall Tour

The Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce and the Edina Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to offer the Fall Tour 2004 in Scotland and Knox counties.

The special promotion will be held Saturday, October 30th with more than 40 participating businesses in the two communities.

The event will feature five special tour stops in addition to all of the participating businesses. The Downing House will offer tours at 10:00 a.m., noon and 2:00 p.m.. The historic Bible Grove School will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with tours every hour.

The Downing House was built in 1858 and houses much of the rich history of Scotland County, including a room dedicated to the 8í4Ē tall Ella Ewing.

The Barnett Statue is another special destination for the event. The war-era relic is located off of Route M and the gravel road will be marked with balloons. The Purnell Betts Barnett monument was erected in his memory by his parents near their family farm in rural Scotland County.

Tour points in Knox County will include the St. Joseph Catholic Church with tours at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Visitors also will get a special tour of historic Newark, the oldest town in Knox County. Tours start at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and will include Seaver Lake, Kelly Rock Quarry and burial sites of five unknown soldiers.

In addition to the special tour points, member businesses of both chambers will feature special events at their businesses throughout the day. Maps, including complete lists of participating businesses as well as directions to each stop, will be available at all tour stops.

ďThere will be numerous in-store specials offered October 30th, with many promotions requiring participants to have a map in order to qualify,í said one of the eventís organizers, Tammy Adams of the MACC.

Each business will have a sign-up for two $75 prizes to be given away. Two lucky winners will win either $50 in Memphis Bucks and $25 in Edina Bucks, or vice versa.

Participating businesses in Knox County include Farm & Home; Frankís Appliances; Colony Store; Grannyís Country Store; This & That; Remember When Antiques; Blakeís Furniture; Raeís Cafť; Baileyís Floral and Gifts; Pizza Haus; The Blue Room; Country Barn Cafť; Stagecoach Pizza; Edina Country Club; Oliverís Cafť; Knox City Lanes; Ozark Steak House; Gossmanís Jewelry Store and Just a Hair Better.

In addition to the special tour events, the MACC will host a scarecrow contest on the city square. The winning designer will take home $25 in Memphis Bucks for the best scarecrow.

There will be a special late movie at the Memphis Theatre beginning at 9:00 p.m. in conjunction with the event.

Adams stated it is not too late for MACC members to participate in the event. They can be added to the tour by calling her at 465-7500. She did remind participating businesses that they will need to provide the sign-up boxes for the special prizes from the chambers.
