Jones Smashes Way To Win In 2004 Demo Derby

The 2004 Scotland County Fairís Demolition Derby was a smashing success. The event, which is normally held on the Saturday night of the fair in July, was moved to September where it stood alone on the schedule of events for the Labor Day weekend.

The schedule change did not seem to affect the fans, as an estimated 800 spectators filed into the grandstands to watch 21 cars compete for the top prize money.

The event started with a parade lap, during which the crowd helped determine the best looking car, which won a cash prize sponsored by Walker Motors and Collision Repair Center of Memphis. Les Richmond took the prize with his bright yellow #18R car.

The Scotland County Fire Department, which ran the show, took the top three cars from each heat race for the main event. After nine cars qualified for the big show, the remaining cars were given 15 minutes to make repairs and head back for the B-main for one last chance to qualify.

During the intermission, the fans were entertained with a three-car outlaw show. The fire department allowed these three cars, which did not pass inspection for different rules violations, to go head-to-head. Randy Rominger of Bloomfield won the event in the 13R car.

Three additional cars qualified in the B-main bringing the field for the final event to 12 cars. Of those 12 qualifiers only 10 made it to the track for the drop of the green flag.

When the smoke cleared, there was just one car still running, the #55x of Jody Jones of Memphis. He outlasted his brother, Bill Jones of Arbela, who settled for second.

The rest of the top 10 was Kyle Zimmert (#79) of Kahoka; Curtis Cochran (#177) of Memphis; Michael Billings (#24) of Arbela; Chris Comstock (#9z) of Downing; Harold Miller (#74) of Gorin; Scott Adams (#474) of Wyaconda; Kenny Armstrong (#a-1) of Memphis and Gordon Hudson (#44) of Arbela.

Jody Jones took home the top prize of $412 and a trophy from the fire department. It was his second consecutive victory in the event.

Jeff McBee was named the ďHard-ChargerĒ for his big hits in the #360 car. He won a $100 prize sponsored by the fire department.
