Demo Derby To Highlight Busy Labor Day Weekend

While the Scotland County Speedway may be taking the Labor Day weekend off that doesnít mean the track will lie dormant over the holiday. The Scotland County Fire Department in conjunction with the Fair Board will be hosting the annual Demolition Derby at the racetrack on Sunday, September 5.

This will once again be a no-weld derby, meaning participants will not be allowed to make alterations to the cars specifically to strengthen the machineís performance in the crash-up derby.

The firemen will begin checking cars in at 3:30 p.m. with the gates to the pits closing at 6:00 p.m. The green flag will fall on the first heat of the demolition derby at 6:30 p.m.

For more information, interested participants can contact Stacy Westhoff at (660) 945-3069 or Robert Arnold (660) 465-2726.

The fairgrounds will be busy throughout the holiday weekend as the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus will be in town on Monday, September 6 to perform two shows under the big top at the Scotland County Fairgrounds.

Thanks to the sponsorship of the Scotland County Rotary Club, Americaís Favorite Big Top Circus is coming to Memphis with two scheduled performances at 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

In its 20th season, C&M Circus has become internationally known for quality family entertainment. This authentic One-Ring, Big Top Circus has been featured on National Geographicís Explorer TV series, Entertainment Tonight, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, Arizona Highways Magazine, and most recently on the A&E Special: Under the Big Top.

This yearís lineup includes an all-star group of performers and entertainers, including:

the high-energy teeterboard and acrobatic routines of the Las Palmas Troup,

the Arlise Troup presenting aerial and unicycle acts,

Natalie and her American Eskimo Escapades,

Doodles the Clown,

Miss Simone and her Birds of Paradise,

and Casey Caninan with all his wonderful animals.

The public is invited out on circus morning to watch the raising of the Big Top between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. Immediately following the tent raising, stay for the FREE Endangered Species Show. This presentation offers a unique face-to-face opportunity for families, schools, and interested community members to meet and learn about all of the animals in the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus family. The menagerie is on display all day.
