Contested County Races Expected To Generate High Voter Turnout

After more than a decade of service two Scotland County Commissioners will be stepping down at the end of the year. The announcement that Republican Eastern District Commissioner Roger Riebel and Democrat Western District Commissioner Dean Childress would not be seeking re-election set off a whirlwind of filings for the two offices.

On Tuesday, August 3rd voters will take the first step in replacing the two long-time commissioners as the primary will decide the official November ballot.

The Eastern District has the largest race with five candidates vying for the Democrat nomination and two Republicans working for their partys ballot spot.

Voters that select the Democrat ballot will have to choose between Win Hill, Junior Snodgrass, Stanley Hatfield, Robert Moseley and Kenneth Eggleston. Republicans will choose between Steve Kirkpatrick and Chris Van Hoozen.

The Western District is a slightly smaller race with only three Democrat candidates. Harold (Lew) Prather, Paul Campbell and Tom Priebe are seeking the nomination. Greta (Phillips) Slocum is the lone Republican candidate for the job.

Public Administrator is another highly contested race for both parties.

Shelley (Baker) Small, Linda (Kapfer) Brown and Mary L. Morgan are all listed on the Democrat ballot. On the Republican side it is Ronald L. Alexander vs. Ellen Aylward.

The Primary wont impact the other county races. Republican Jim Ward and Democrat Teresa Skinner will have to wait until November to decide the issue, as will sheriff candidates Republican Wayne Winn and Democrat Mike Steeples.

Coroner Ginny Monroe, a Democrat, is the lone county official that has no opposition on either the primary or general election ballots.

First Circuit Judge Gary Dial, who serves Scotland, Schuyler and Clark counties, also is running unopposed in the primary and general election.
