Relay For Life Raises $30,000 For Battle Against Cancer

In just four years the Scotland County Relay For Life has raised nearly $100,000 for the American Cancer Society’s battle against the disease.

This years’ event, held June 18-19, helped push the local fundraiser toward the high level after gathering more than $30,000 in 2004.

“We raised a total of $30,495.21 and it is all because of our teams, people who donated and our wonderful community which gave so generously from the heart,” said Relay For Life Committee Chairperson Diane Tague.

The evening opened with a ceremonial first lap by local cancer survivors. A total of 71 survivors made the trek around the Memphis City Square to start the event.

The event’s 11 teams then took to the track to begin the marathon walk-a-thon. Each team had at least one walker making his or her way around the square for the entire event. From 6:30 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. the next morning the members of the 11 teams completed 8,749 laps. At approximately two-tenths of a mile per lap, the walkers covered an estimated 1,750 miles over the 12 hours.

As the evening wore on the walkers had the comforting lighing coming from the luminary candles around the square. Donors purchased 596 luminaries in memory of loved ones lost to cancer or in honor of those still fighting the disease.

The relay teams sponsored a number of fundraising events throughout the evening. A number of food stands were available on the courthouse lawn also adding to the revenue generated by the event.

Spectators as well as the relay teams were entertained throughout the evening. The 4-H Canine Capers group presented a dog show. Shawn McNamar, Jason Hawes and Mitch McClamroch gave a special surprise performance. Jessica Erwin, Jessie Cotton and Dustin Crump also performed during the event.

“We have to give a huge thank you to everyone for making our relay a huge success,” Tague said. “We hope that next year will be as big of a success as this year.”

That’s right, the committee has already turned its attention to the 2005 event. Committee members met June 28 to finalize the recently completed relay and begin planning for 2005. Next year’s relay will be held June 17-18.

“Mark it on your calendar so you can plan to be with us again,” Tague stated. “If you are interested in starting a team or helping in any way, please contact one of the committee members. Remember without you, the people, we would not be able to help in this worthy cause.”

Committee members are Tague, Phyllis Mallett, Leslie Troutman, Beverly Moore, Kathy Gardner and Chris Tinkle.
