Patrol Reports Pair Of Wrecks On Route M

The Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated a pair of accidents on Route M near Rutledge in the past two weeks.

The first crash occurred June 11 at 5:30 p.m. eight miles south of Memphis.

According to the Patrol David E. Martin, 22, was northbound on Route M in a 1989 Ford Ranger. The Martin truck crossed the center line and struck a 1995 Ford driven by Patricia J. Dundee, 25, of Wyaconda. Martinís truck traveled off the west side of the road where it struck a fence and overturned before coming to rest in a field. Dundeeís car travelled off the west side of the road and struck a road sign before coming to rest in the ditch.

Martin suffered serious injuries and was taken by Air-Evac helicopter to Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. Marcy Gordy, a passenger in the Dundee car, suffered moderate injuries and was taken by Scotland County Ambulance to Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Scotland County Sheriffís Department, the ambulance service and fire and rescue. Martin was issued a summons.

Three Rutledge residents were hurt in the second crash, which occurred June 17 at 4:50 p.m. half a mile west of Rutledge near the MoDOT shed.

According to the Patrol, Jennifer S. Johnston, 38, was eastbound on Route M in a 1984 Chevrolet Celebrity when the car went off the right side of the roadway, struck a culvert and went airborne.

Jennifer Johnston suffered serious injuries in the crash. She was taken by Air-Evac helicopter to Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

Two passengers in the car, her sons Kyle Johnston, 6, and Eric Johnston, 12, also were injured in the crash. Kyle suffered serious injuries. He was taken by Scotland County Ambulance to Scotland County Memorial Hospital and then was life-flighted to Blessing Hospital. Eric was taken by Scotland County Ambulance to Blessing Hospital.

The Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Scotland County Sheriffís Department, the ambulance service and volunteer fire and rescue personnel. Arrests are pending.
