Kids Finding Summer Adventure At School

Two hundred and two elementary students in next years kindergarten through fifth grade are attending summer school at the North Elementary School in Memphis. The program is supported by Newton Learning and is entitled 2004 Summer Adventure.

We are extremely fortunate to have this many children attend summer school, said Principal Rob Moore. This is 74 percent of our anticipated enrollment for next year. This is one reason for our continued high test scores. Our parents and staff work hard to help our children and I am proud of their continued efforts.

The Summer Adventure is dedicated to the cultivation of strong character. Students who learn these lessons early are more motivated to achieve because they understand that they have real control over their educational progress. They recognize that all students have the ability to excel, that hard work pays off, and that luck is not the key to success. Students know that their futures are very much in their own hands.

Classes start each morning at 8:00 a.m. and include instruction in reading, science, social studies and mathematics. Afternoon sessions include a variety of enrichment activities revolving around music, art, computers, rockets and go-karts.

Scotland County R-I Elementary has a long tradition of summer school.

It is extremely important to keep children learning over the summer to prevent excessive academic loss, said Moore. The opportunity for children to learn the ropes gives each of the prospective new students a big head start on next year.

The potential for additional aid and academic growth is made available by many of the schools regular staff members.

Once again our children were fortunate to have our teachers working with the students in a level the instructor was familiar with, Moore said. These teachers worked through the month of June to help our kids become better prepared for the upcoming school year.

The 2004 summer school staff consisted of Linda Marlowe, Sharon Triplett, Dawn Triplett, Julie Wickert, Susan Burns, Meera Shinn, Shari Moore, Teresa Cotton, Terri Emel, Jason Jones, Jeannie Childress, Sheri Kapfer, Debbie Caldwell, Lori Fulk and Marie Alexander.
