Arts Festival Brings Several Hundred Exhibits To Memphis

To say there was a variety of artwork on display on the Memphis Square May 15 would be an understatement. Area businesses put several hundred exhibits up in their storefront windows around the square as part of the Ella Ewing Art Festival sponsored by the Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce.

Four area school systems participated in the event, that featured up to five pieces of art from each school in each grade from kindergarten to twelfth grade.

In addition there were more than 40 pieces entered into the adult category, which were shown at individual booths on the courthouse lawn.

Gin Lammert of Pulaski, IA, had the winning exhibit. Her pastel All Stacked Up was judged the number one exhibit of the show.

Lucas Remley of Memphis was runner-up with his metal work Iron Flowers. Jennifer Crawford of Memphis received third place for her portrait entry.

Scotland County was the overall winner in the school contest. SCR-I took the top honor with 40 points. Knox County finished second followed by Highland and Clark County. Ribbons were awarded to the top three exhibits in each grade. First place earned three points, second two points and third one point toward the overall score. The event was juried by an independent judge from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, IA.
