Youth Center Taking Steps Toward Future
The new Scotland County Youth Center is taking steps toward the future. Actually the community project needs some help with these steps, as skilled construction workers are needed for the group’s work day scheduled for May 1 to help replace some of the building’s stairways.
Even without the stairs, the group has been climbing towards its goal of opening a community youth center in Memphis.
Last week the Scotland County Youth Association officially was incorporated. The group is finalizing work on receiving 501c3 status to allow the organization to seek further funding through grants and other charitable donations. The organization already has established its tax exempt status.
While work has progressed on the facility the next step will be securing additional funding to help the project continue to move forward.
A work day is scheduled for Saturday, May 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Another session will be held May 15 at the site.
“We need all kinds of help,” said organizer Joe Miller. “We need special skills like construction workers, electricians and plumbers but anyone is welcome to come lend a hand to this project as there is plenty of work to be done by anyone willing to help.”
Miller said the work is progressing well at the facility. He noted while the site needs as much volunteer help as possible, donations and contributions of materials are in even higher demand. He encouraged local groups and individuals that want to support the project but can not attend the work days to contact representatives of the group about making a financial contribution.
